Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan has held discussions with newly elected councillors on the establishment of junior colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres in atolls.
The government has decided to establish junior colleges in Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll and Kendhikulhudhoo, Noonu Atoll, as well as TVET centres in Addu, Fuvahmulah and Kulhudhuffushi City. Furthermore, the government has also decided to contract a private party to operate the Polytechnic campus in Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll.
During the meeting held with newly elected local councillors, the higher education minister shared details of these projects including the aim and desired outcome of the projects. The minister noted the projects will be conducted in a public-private partnership, with opportunities provided for investors to generate additional revenue in the plots given for the development of the institutes. He added the institutes will be developed with accommodation blocks, to provide the opportunity for students from other islands to enroll in the institutes.
Councillors who took part in the meeting endorsed the decision to conduct the projects under a public-private partnership, noting the projects are vital for the future and development of the respective islands and atolls. They also assured full support and cooperation to the government to successfully complete the projects.
