State receives USD 6.23 million as Green Tax in April

Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has revealed the state received USD 6.23 million as Green Tax in April.

According to statistics published by MIRA, the USD 6.23 million received as Green Tax in April this year is a 36.6 percent increase compared to USD 4.5 million received in March 2021.

Revenue from Green Tax declined last year due to the suspension of tourist arrivals amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the latest figures show a significant monthly increase in Green Tax collection following the reopening of borders and increase in average nights spent by tourists in the Maldives. According to statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism, on average, tourists spend a 9-day holiday in the country.

Green Tax is payable by tourists who stay in resorts, hotels, liveaboards and guest houses. Green Tax is payable at the rate of USD 6 per day of stay from resorts, hotels and liveaboards, and USD 3 per day of stay from guesthouses. Maldivians and resident permit holders are not required to pay Green Tax.
