President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the current top priority of the administration is to bring the attackers of Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed to justice.
Speaking at the National Congress of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), President Solih highlighted the serious injuries sustained by Speaker Nasheed during the terrorist attack on May 6, and noted he is currently recovering from a 16-hour operation. President Solih said he spoke to Nasheed during his hospital visit and that the speaker remains courageous and determined. He said the top priority of the administration is to bring individuals involved in the terrorist attack to justice, adding the investigative authorities are using all available resources and working with international experts to investigate the case.
Highlighting the progress being made, President Solih said the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is questioning the prime suspect and two other arrested suspects, and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has gained valuable information on the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated in the attack. President Solih said Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed is continuously updating him and the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services on the progress of the case.
The president further said the MDP Parliamentary Group has formed a special committee to assist MPS to obtain the necessary resources. He added the Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem will be representing the prosecution in the trial.
Furthermore, President Solih said the government will bring everyone involved in the attack to justice and will not allow the terrorists to frighten citizens and create disorder in the country.
