The Speaker of the Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has returned to the Maldives after attending the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Cambodia.
The Speaker departed for Cambodia on 26 August to participate in the conference, accompanied by a delegation of members of the Parliament.
The 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from 26 to 28 August. At the conference, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla delivered remarks on the theme, “Solidarity for Peace and Shared Prosperity: Strengthening International Law and Resolving Conflicts Peacefully.”
In his address, the Speaker stressed the need to strengthen ties between legislatures to promote global peace and prosperity. He also called for respect for international law and prioritising dialogue.
Speaking about the role of legislatures in maintaining peace, the Speaker said parliamentary diplomacy strengthens relations between countries and creates opportunities for dialogue. He said dialogue and cooperation should always be prioritised over confrontation and violence.
The Speaker also called on parliamentary leaders to renew their commitment to resolving conflicts peacefully and strengthening international relations.
The Speaker was accompanied on the trip by Hithadhoo constituency Parliamentarian Mohamed Shahid, Machangolhi South constituency Parliamentarian Mustafa Hussain, Faresmaathodaa constituency Parliamentarian Ashraf Rasheed, Chief of Bureau at the Parliament Secretariat Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, and Assistant Director General of the Foreign Relations Department Zuyyina Badhree.
The Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference brings together speakers and parliamentary leaders to discuss peace, international law, conflict resolution and sustainable development.
