Ministry of Tourism has revealed all but 10 resorts of the Maldives have resumed operations since the reopening of borders in July last year.
Maldives reopened its borders for tourists on July 15 last year, more than three months after borders were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tourism ministry revealed 149 of the 159 resorts registered in the Maldives have resumed operations after closing due to the shutdown of borders. The ministry revealed only 10 resorts are yet to commence operations since the reopening of borders.
The tourism ministry revealed the Maldives currently has a bed capacity of 34,344 across all the resorts that have resumed operations. This represents over 92% of the total bed capacity across all registered resorts, which amounts to 37,140.
Meanwhile, the total number of beds brought into operation across all types of tourist facilities amounts to over 45,000. 76% of this figure is contributed by resorts, while guesthouses make up 15% of this figure. Liveaboards and hotels contribute 6% and 3% of the current bed capacity of the Maldives, respectively.
As per the statistics of the tourism ministry, over 243,000 tourist arrivals have been recorded so far this year. Last year, the Maldives recorded 555,494 tourist arrivals.
