Over 94% of tourist beds in the Maldives brought back into operation

Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has revealed over 94% of tourist beds in the Maldives have been brought back into operation since the reopening of borders in July last year.

Speaking at an event held to inaugurate the logo for the 50th anniversary of the Maldivian tourism industry, Tourism Minister Mausoom said significant progress has been achieved by the tourism industry since the reopening of borders. As such, he noted over 94% of tourist beds have been brought back into operation, while the majority of employees who lost their jobs due to the pandemic have been reinstated.

The tourism minister further stated the planned opening of new resorts this year would create an additional 9,000 jobs. He added the reopening of the two main resorts in Addu would also reinstate the jobs of many people in the region.

The tourism minister further highlighted efforts to widen the contribution of locals in the tourism sector, by ensuring more locals are involved in senior management levels in the industry. He noted the investment platforms have also been redesigned to allow locals to collaborate with foreign investors.
