MPL commences Port Worker Induction Programme

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has commenced the Port Worker Induction Programme, aimed at training port workers operating at Male’ Commercial Harbour.

The programme was officially inaugurated by MPL’s CEO Shahid Ali on February 24. Speaking at a press conference held following the inauguration of the programme, CEO Shahid Ali said the programme is part of MPL’s efforts to enhance the safety of port operations and to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries at the port. Noting all operations inside the port currently take place in one area, Shahid said port workers, clearing agents, drivers and consignee representatives gather in the same area which leads to accidents and injuries. He said the objective of the training programme is to train port workers on the safety guidelines and best practices in order to avoid such accidents.

Shahid further revealed all port workers are required to complete this programme within the next 6 months. He said individuals who do not undertake the training programme will not be permitted to enter the port.

Shahid also revealed MPL has decided to strengthen the regulation of clearing agents working in the port. He also noted the procedure to acquire the port entrance permit will be tightened, mandating legal clearance from courts and Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) to be submitted along with the police certificate to apply for the permit.

MPL has stepped up efforts to enhance the safety and security of Male’ Commercial Harbour, following two recent accidents in the port which has led to the death of two port workers.
