Chief Magistrate of Maamendhoo Magistrate Court Ahmed Shukoor has resigned from his position amid a dismissal motion launched against him by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
JSC initiated a dismissal motion against Shukoor following an investigation into multiple accusations of misconduct. JSC had also suspended him for a duration of 60 days.
Shukoor is accused of having an illegal meeting with a defense lawyer in a case submitted to the court in April 2018, and collecting an envelope while the case was still ongoing. He is also accused of taking part in a political event held to gather support for a candidate contesting in the 2018 presidential elections, as well as publicly endorsing a political party in August 2018. Furthermore, Shukoor is also accused of disclosing a remand decision to the police prior to the remand hearing, and acting in violation of the code of conduct expected from a judge during the remand hearing.
JSC revealed Shukoor was found guilty of all the accusations raised against him.
