Population of the Maldives exceeds 500,000

National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed the estimated current population of the Maldives is 557,426.

As per the statistics, 40.8% of the Maldivian population is based in the Greater Male’ Region, accounting for about 227,486 people. NBS revealed apart from Male’ City, most number of people are living in Kaafu Atoll with a combined population of 41,382.

The statistics show that there are 4 islands with a population lower than 10,000. As such, Vaavu Atoll, Meemu Atoll, Faafu Atoll and Gnaviyani Atoll are noted as atolls with a population less than 10,000. The lowest number of people are living in Vaavu Atoll which consists of 2,688 people.

Further, statistics show that 10 atolls have a population between 10,001 and 20,000. Meanwhile, 5 atolls have a population between 20,001 and 30,000.

While the latest statistics revealed the population has exceeded 500,000, the census of 2014 showed the Maldives had a population of 402,071 back then.
