Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has stated the contribution of China is vital for the economic recovery efforts of the Maldives following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the virtual reception held to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Minister Shahid said the bilateral relationship between China and the Maldives is anchored in shared historic bonds, sovereign equality and the commitment of the Maldives to the One-China Policy. Noting this year will mark the 48th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, the minister affirmed the Maldives remains committed to strengthening ties with China.
Speaking further, the foreign minister highlighted the importance of enhancing trade and commercial relations between the two countries, in order to revive the Maldivian economy which has been hit hard due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The minister also highlighted the importance of the Chinese market for Maldivian tourism, which forms the backbone of the local economy. As such, he said the contribution from China is vital for the economic revival efforts of the Maldives.
In his remarks, Minister Shahid acknowledged the support and assistance provided by China towards the COVID-19 relief efforts of the Maldives. He also expressed hope the Maldives would benefit from any successful vaccine for COVID-19 which may be developed by China.
