President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Abdul Ghanee Mohamed as the new Chief Justice of the Maldives, a day after the Parliament unanimously backed his nomination.
Abdul Ghanee’s appointment as Chief Justice was made in accordance with Article 147 of the Constitution. The oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Hameed after which the Chief Justice signed the official declaration.
Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee holds an LLB (Hons.) in Law and Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University (2000), a Master’s degree in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Shariah Policy (2022), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (2024) from the Islamic University of Maldives. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Legislative Policy.
Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice, he served as President of the Tax Appeal Tribunal and has held academic positions as a lecturer at the Islamic University of Maldives, Villa College, and Zikra College. His judicial career encompasses service on the benches of the Supreme Court and Civil Court, as well as his tenure as Chief Judge of the High Court after having also served on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
