National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has decided to allow families displaced in the fire which broke out in Male’ City on September 20, 2019 to stay in temporary shelters for another 3 months.
Temporary shelters were provided in Gaakoshi flats in Male’ City for residents of buildings which were destroyed in the fire. Some of the families have moved out of the temporary shelters after receiving financial aid from the administration. However, some families still remain in the temporary shelters after being unable to move out due to different reasons.
Families living in temporary shelters were initially given until the end of this month to relocate using the aid provided by the administration. However, NDMA announced the families have been permitted to stay in temporary shelters for another 3 months, considering the current situation of the country.
The fire on September 20, 2019 saw 7 residential buildings and 4 warehouses burnt down, with over 800 people seeking assistance following the incident. 38 families were moved to temporary homes, of which 24 families were renting apartments in the fire-affected buildings.
The administration provided aid to 115 families who were affected by fire, covering 20% of the damages incurred on household items. The aid collected to the fire relief fund was also distributed among affected families in accordance to the level of damage incurred.
