Dhaalu Airport to be upgraded to an international airport

Dhaalu Airport Holdings Private Limited has revealed it is working to upgrade Dhaalu Airport as an international airport.

Speaking at a webinar organised by the National Federation of Maldivian Employers (NFME), CEO Mohamed Khaleel said Dhaalu Airport Holdings is working to secure all permits from the authorities to upgrade the airport. Khaleel said the airport was developed to international standards and what remains is only attaining the approvals. He proposed the idea of collaborating with Sri Lanka and India to create a travel bubble in efforts to attract tourists to the Maldives. He also said the government must facilitate easy transfer to resorts from nearest airports after upgrading domestic airports in the country.

Dhaalu Airport developed in Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll is the largest domestic airport in the country with a 1,800-metre runway and space for private jet parking. A total of USD 20 million was spent to develop the airport after reclaiming 62 hectares from the lagoon of the island.
