A survey done in the Maldives has showed the economic downfall experienced due to COVID-19 widely impacted 5 out of every 10 business in the country.
The survey, which was conducted by Maldives National University (MNU) showed the income generated by 4 out of every 10 business completely stopped during the pandemic. The survey revealed 1 out of every 10 business survived without experiencing any impacts of COVID-19.
The survey noted 71% of the Maldivian population earned from jobs, 16% earned from businesses, 6% from rents and pensions and 7% of the population had no earnings before the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the survey showed the income of 1 out of every 10 employees was completely disrupted, income of 3 out of every 10 employees was reduced and only 5 out of 10 employees survived without any impacts on their jobs during the pandemic. The survey further revealed 1 out of every 10 employees will lose their jobs within the next 10 months.
The survey, conducted online was participated by 2,871 individuals, is endorsed by the National Council on Health Research and is registered at the Maldives National University (MNU). The survey team consisted of former Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Dr. Fazeel Najeeb, Dr. Sheena Moosa, Dr. Mariyam Suzana and Dr. Raheema Abdul Raheem.
