Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed has stated the government plans to open local guesthouses for tourists in August.
Speaking at the webinar hosted by the World Trading Organisation (UNWTO) on the impact of COVID-19 on international tourism, Minister Ali Waheed stated the Maldives is preparing to reopen borders in July and welcome tourists into resorts and safaris under the new normal policies to be adopted in the country following the COVID-19 pandemic. He said local guesthouses are planned to be opened in August, based on the how the situation of COVID-19 progresses after reopening borders.
The minister further stated certain measures will be taken when reopening borders in order to ensure the safety of locals as well as tourists. As such, he noted security measures in airports will be strengthened, while a mandatory COVID-19 test will be conducted on all tourists upon arrival.
