Ministry of Islamic Affairs has confirmed the day of Eid al-Fitr in the Maldives is Sunday, May 24.
Speaking after the moon sighting ceremony, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir stated, according to scientific observations, crescent moon will not be visible to any part of the country, nor will any Islamic country sight the moon. Hence, the ministry declared Saturday, May 23, as the last day of Ramadan.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims observe fasting for a month. Islands with no restrictive measures will be allowed to perform Eid prayers in congregation. However, congregational Eid prayers will not be held in the capital city due to lockdown imposed in the Greater Male' region following the outbreak of COVID-19.
