Action plan to resume tourism operations to be launched in June

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has stated the action plan on resuming tourism operations in the Maldives is set to be launched virtually on June 8.

MMPRC stated the action plan, titled Maldives - The Sun Will Shine Again, is being formulated by tourism authorities and stakeholders of the industry. The corporation said the plan will include the new policies and procedures to be implemented upon resuming tourism operations in the Maldives following the COVID-19 pandemic.

MMPRC said the action plan is to be launched on June 8 during a 3-hour virtual event hosted on Facebook. The corporation revealed celebrities, social media influencers, artists and other well-wishers of the Maldivian tourism industry will take part in the event.

MMPRC noted the opportunity is open for individuals who wish to include their message at the event. The corporation said members of the public can provide a 1-minute recorded message expressing their opinion on reopening borders and resuming tourism operations in the Maldives.

Tourism operations were suspended in the Maldives in March due to the global outbreak of COVID-19. With an economy highly dependent on revenue generated from tourism, the suspension of tourism operations has badly impacted the financial and economic situation of the Maldives.

While the government has developed 5 potential scenarios for the tourism industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the most likely scenario involves reopening borders in October.
