Maldives increasing quarantine facilities

Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed has stated the Maldives has enough facilities to quarantine as many individuals as necessary in case of an outbreak, although efforts are underway to further increase quarantine facilities as instructed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Speaking to PSM News, Minister Ali Waheed said the ministry is negotiating with stakeholders to set up additional facilities in resorts. He stated the country currently has over 1,200 beds in resorts to be used as quarantine facilities. He revealed the number can be further doubled if necessary, as the administration currently has many resorts available for additional facilities.

The administration has recently announced the suspension of flights operated to repatriate Maldivians stranded abroad, after positive COVID-19 cases were identified in Male’ City. Despite the temporary suspension, doctors pursuing specialisations in Nepal and Bangladesh will be evacuated in the government’s bid to increase number of health professionals in the country.
