STO reduces prices of perishable items

State Trading Organisation (STO) has reduced the prices of perishable food items.

With the revision of prices, a kilo of onion will be available for USD 0.71, a kilo of potato for USD 0.78 and an egg for USD 0.097. Furthermore, STO revealed an onion sack previously sold for USD 21.10 will now be available for USD 16.56. Meanwhile, a case of egg initially available for USD 18.83 is now sold at USD 16.88.

Late March, STO began rationing the sale of onions, potato and eggs following a price hike of the items due to increasing demand. Before the cap on prices by the government, a kilo of onion was sold between USD 1.95 and USD 2.60. The government decided a kilo of onion or a kilo of potato cannot be sold for more than USD 1.30 and an egg must be sold for USD 0.12.

Ministry of Economic Development has established a price ceiling as part of the efforts to control the price of the basic food items sold in the Maldives.
