Maldives evacuates 159 locals from two Indian cities

The national airline, Maldivian, has evacuated 159 locals from Bengaluru and Cochin in India.

Manager, PR and Communications of Maldivian Moosa Waseem revealed 159 individuals who were seeking treatment under the universal health insurance scheme of Aasandha Company Limited were evacuated from the two Indian cities. The locals were taken to a quarantine facility upon arrival to the Maldives, where they will undergo tests for COVID-19 following the completion of the mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

In addition, Maldivian has evacuated a total of 884 Maldivians from 4 countries, including 100 Maldivians from Colombo, Sri Lanka, 205 Maldivians from Trivandrum, India, 188 Maldivians from Cochin, India, 197 Maldivians from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and 35 Maldivians from Kathmandu, Nepal. Meanwhile, the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) revealed discussions are underway to evacuate Maldivians stranded in Bangladesh.

NEOC has advised Maldivians stranded overseas against travelling back to the Maldives unless a return is essential.
