Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has stated it is crucial for councillors to take initiative and work with citizens to increase the yield from farming.
Speaking to PSM News, Director-General of Agriculture Ibrahim Shabau said there are no sufficient land plots for farming after leasing land plots for housing. However, he noted it is possible to farm in small spaces.
Furthermore, the director-general noted some local councils assist farmers in marketing their produce. In this regard, Shabau highlighted the efforts of the island council of Maalhos, Baa Atoll, revealing such support motivates farmers. He said councillors and citizens must work together to increase the crop grown in the country since importing products is a challenge due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The director-general assured the ministry is willing to provide technical support to all farmers.
