Parliament approves appointment for Gender Minister

Parliament of Maldives has approved the appointment of Aishath Mohamed Didi as the Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services. The appointment was passed with votes from 68 parliamentarians.

The Parliamentary Committee on Government Oversight decided to approve the nomination on March 4. The committee passed the appointment unanimously.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih presented Aishath Mohamed Didi with the letter of appointment at a ceremony held at the President's Office on February 9. She undertook the oath of a cabinet member in front of the president while Supreme Court Justice Husnu Suood administered the oath.

Prior to the appointment, Aishath Mohamed Didi was serving as the Ambassador of Maldives to India. She has also previously served as Minister of Gender and Family between 2005 and 2008 and has served civil and public affairs for a long period of time. Her experience includes freelance consultancy for Education and Child/Women’s Rights, Chairperson of Gender Equality Council, Chairperson of Children’s Home Governing Board, Chairperson of the Council for the Rights of the Child, Member of United Nations Task Force on Youth and Adolescents and Member of United Nations Task Force on Gender.

Aishath Mohamed Didi completed Master of Arts from the Institute of Education, University of London. She also completed Bachelor of Arts and Diploma in Teaching from the American University of Beirut.

Aishath Mohamed Didi was appointed as the gender minister following the resignation of Shidhatha Shareef.
