Maldives bans import of birds from countries affected by bird flu

Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has temporarily banned the import of birds from countries that have reported cases of bird flu.

The fisheries ministry said the administration is taking precautions in advance to prevent a spread of bird flu in Maldives, as some countries have been reporting cases in recent weeks. The ministry said a duration has not been set for the ban, adding an announcement will be made on a date to lift the ban.

Bird flu is caused by a virus that affects the respiratory system of humans and birds. It is carried through blood and other fluids of birds.
