Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has ordered Maldives Police Service (MPS) to conduct a criminal investigation over negligence in sending off a tourist infected with COVID-19.
The Italian tourist who holidayed in Kuredu Island Resort was reported positive for COVID-19 after he flew back from Maldives and before he flew back, he stayed in Male' City for two days and moved about in two different areas. The government of Maldives has also stated it will take action against parties involved over negligence, for sending the infected tourist off without reporting the case to authority. Contact tracing indicated that the Italian tourist holidaying in Maldives consulted the resort doctor due to high fever.
National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) further revealed it was found that the tourist transited in Male' and stayed in Maagiri Hotel for two days. The hotel has been closed down to carry out disinfection. During his transit period in Male', the Italian tourist also went to the ticketing office of Universal Travel Services.
15 individuals in Maagiri Hotel have been kept in room isolation even though no symptoms of COVID-19 have been identified from them. The staff who attended to the tourist at the hotel was transferred to Farukolhufulhi to be quarantined after developing symptoms of the virus but was tested negative.
