Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has expressed the bilateral relations between Maldives and Brunei will reach new heights in the years to come. The minister made the statement during his meeting with the Sultan of Brunei His Majesty Hassanal Bolkiah.
During the meeting, Minister Shahid conveyed the best wishes from the President, Government and the people of Maldives, to the Sultan and the friendly people of Brunei. Minister Shahid also expressed the Maldivian government’s desire to further strengthen the people-to-people contacts between the two countries. He also took the opportunity to thank the Sultan for the generous offer of full scholarships extended by Brunei, which are contributing to the development of human resources of the Maldives.
Since the Maldives and Brunei share common views on a range of international issues, Minister Shahid assured the Sultan that the Maldives - Brunei relations will reach new heights in the years to come. The minister conveyed the importance Maldives places in promoting Islamic values and strengthening political and economic ties with member counties of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. He further reiterated that the shared membership of both countries in the Commonwealth of Nations offer increased opportunities and avenues for cooperation in the multilateral fora on a wide range issues that are of national and international concern.
