Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has opened re-registration opportunity for voters who had registered to locations which did not have the minimum number of voters for the placement of a ballot box.
ECM has decided not to place ballot boxes in some resorts, prisons, industrial locations and foreign countries which did not have the minimum number of registered voters by the end of the initial re-registration period for the local council elections (LCE) and women's development committee (WDC) elections. Therefore, the commission opened the opportunity for voters who had registered in these locations to re-register at a different location before March 7.
Locations that did not reach the required number of voters include Dhoonidhoo Prison, Thilafushi, Hulhule' and Gan in Addu City as well as Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh and New Delhi in India. Additionally, ECM has decided not to place ballot boxes in 28 resorts that did not get the required number of registered voters.
ECM announced 538 ballot boxes will be placed across the country, including 169 boxes in Male' City. ECM said 269,562 people are eligible to vote in LCE and WDC elections scheduled to be held on April 4.
