Floating island concept is the future of Maldives: Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated Maldives will adopt the concept of floating islands, remarking the concept will be observed in the new development projects in the country.

Speaking to students from Maldives National University (MNU) regarding the first ever Coral Festival held in the country, Nasheed said Maldives has been planning mega projects to increase the production of renewable energy in the country. Nasheed, who is also the Speaker of Parliament, stated experts and policy makers held important discussions which include planting corals, reviving reefs and adapting a more environmentally friendly approach in carrying developmental projects.

Nasheed stated many of the participants who travelled to Maldives to participate in the festival and expressed the concept of floating islands. Nasheed, who is also the chair of the Maldives Coral Institute, said the floating houses and solar panels will reduce the emission of carbon from the country. Admitting the country currently runs rather small projects to protect the environment, he said such projects must scale up in the future.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and cabinet ministers joined the Coral Festival held in Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll. The festival was aimed at increasing awareness on underwater life and increase awareness of people on how to protect them. The festival also included sessions to share information about the Maldives.
