Former President Yameen summoned to MPS

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has summoned former President Abdulla Yameen to the police headquarters today.

The former president was seen being escorted to the main police headquarters in Shaheed Hussain Adam Building this afternoon. It is understood that Yameen was summoned for the investigation of another case related to the corruption scandal of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

Yameen is currently serving a five year prison sentence after being convicted of money laundering in relation to the MMPRC corruption scandal. A list of 75 reasons to release him were presented by his legal team in the appeal hearing at High Court, although the court declared there is no valid reason Yameen should be released. Two more appeal hearings are scheduled for March 3 and March 5 respectively.

Meanwhile, the family of the former president has requested authorities to transfer him to house arrest, citing his deteriorating health. A member of Yameen’s legal team revealed the request, which was issued two days ago, was based on the medical tests conducted in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). However, the legal team stated authorities have not responded to the request yet.

Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison on November 28, 2019.
