Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed the candidacy forms of all 877 candidates contesting from the party in the upcoming local council elections have been accepted by Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM).
Speaking at a press conference held today, Deputy Secretary General (SG) of the main ruling party Afshan Latheef said the number of candidates representing the party in the local council elections have been confirmed as 877, adding the candidacy of all MDP candidates have been accepted by ECM. Afshan said there are a further 402 candidates confirmed to represent the party in the women’s development committee elections, although the party is still working to seek candidates for all constituencies.
The deputy SG further said campaign events are underway in all parts of the country, noting the party has also commenced activities to increase public awareness on the elections. She also said MDP will be conducting an environment-friendly campaign, with minimal use of single-use plastics.
While MDP announced 887 candidates will contest from the party in the council elections, main opposition party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has announced the party has submitted over 700 candidacy forms to ECM. However, PPM has not revealed the number of confirmed candidates from the party.
ECM stated the total number of candidates contesting in the council elections will be announced tonight. The local council elections and the women’s development committee elections are scheduled to be held on April 4.
