Low turnout for MDP event caused by pending issues of Male': Nasheed

President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed has stated the low turnout for the party’s campaign launching event was the result of being unable to provide solutions to the concerns of Male’ citizens.

Speaking at a press conference held at the campaign office of MDP, Nasheed said the citizens of Male’ City have several concerns which have not been yet been addressed. In this regard, Nasheed noted lack of housing remains a primary concern in Male’, adding the complaints from individuals who applied for 7,000 flats under a public housing scheme during the previous administration have still not be resolved. He added the issues of over-congestion and flooding are also major concerns of Male’ citizens that need to be fixed.

Nasheed, who is also the Speaker of Parliament, said although the issues are yet to be fully resolved, the only party that can provide the required solution is still MDP. He expressed belief the people of Male’ City still have faith in the party, despite the low turnout recorded for the party’s campaign launching event ahead of the local council elections.

Furthermore, Nasheed stated MDP is the only party that can provide resolutions to the issues faced by resort employees, noting the work being done to set minimum wage in Maldives. He also criticised the main opposition party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) for the empty pledges of issuing resort shares for resort employees during the previous administration.

The campaign launching event held by MDP in Male’ last night was attended by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and senior officials of the party. MDP also ran campaign launching events across the atolls in parallel to the main event in Male’.
