Child rights protection is a public responsibility: Gender Minister

Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi has stated protecting the rights of children is a public responsibility that has to be fulfilled by working together as a community.

Speaking at the event held to inaugurate the World Thinking Day activities organised by Maldives Girl Guide Association (MGGA), Minister Aishath said the theme for this year's World Thinking Day, Living Threads, offers an important lesson for the society. She said the theme signifies the importance of unity in a society.

The gender minister said Maldives must follow this example when working to protect the rights of children, noting the responsibility does not lie on just a specific group of people or institution. The minister said the society must work together in unison to ensure the protection of children's rights, adding cooperation is required from everybody in the society. Speaking in this regard, she highlighted the importance of public cooperation in implementing the Child Rights Protection Act, which came into effect on February 20.

World Thinking Day has been marked annually by girl guides and scouts since 1926. The activities conducted by MGGA on World Thinking Day focuses on teaching important life skills and creating awareness.

Speaking at the event, Chief Commissioner of MGGA Niumath Shafeeq said the activities will teach the values of unity, equality and appreciation of each other's qualities.The activities, which are being held at Rehendhi School, is partaken by students from 16 schools.

World Thinking Day activities have also been held across the atolls.
