AG approves faster clemency process

Attorney General's Office has passed a policy that requires the Clemency Board to complete evaluations of appeal applicants and advise the president with regards to the appeal within three months after the receipt of clemency appeals. The new policy was approved to run the board more effectively and efficiently following research on Clemency processes.

The Clemency Board was formed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to prescribe the procedure concerning clemency of individuals convicted of criminal offences with reference to Article 115 (s) of the Constitution of Maldives. The board is chaired by the Attorney General and the administrative support for the board is to be provided by the administrative division of Attorney General's Office. The Clemency Board generally responds to written requests regarding clemency of individuals.

The 11-member board includes a parliamentarian, representatives from the legal sector, education sector, social sector, and health sector, in addition to a religious scholar. The board also consists of a representative from Maldives Police Service (MPS), Parole Board, judiciary and a non-governmental organisation.
