Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has started allowing clothing items for detainees and inmates from families after a two-year break.
Clothing items of inmates and detainees from families have been banned since October 15, 2017 due to evidence found by MCS that clothing items were used to smuggle drugs and prohibited items into jails. However, MCS has lifted the ban and has since started following a policy on allowing clothing for inmates from families. The matter was also highlighted in the audit report on prison reforms, which recomended to allow detainees clothing items from families.
MCS revealed although the ban was lifted, it shall follow standards and protocols. MCS will accept items from families every Saturday.
