Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced voter re-registration for local council elections will be opened on February 13.
ECM stated voters will only be required to re-register if they plan to vote at a different location from where they voted during the parliamentary elections in April 2019. The commission has advised the public to complete the re-registration process as early as possible.
Speaking to reporters, Vice President of ECM Ahmed Akram revealed the commission received 373 complaints on the voters’ list by the deadline set for submitting complaints. He said the commission is working on preparing the final voters’ list with as minimal errors as possible.
ECM has decided to place 545 ballot boxes for the election, including 172 boxes in Male’ City, 322 boxes in atolls, 41 boxes in resorts and industrial locations as well as 8 boxes abroad. However, the commission says the final number of ballot boxes will be revealed after the re-registration period.
The local council elections will be held on April 4. A total of 269,562 people are eligible to vote in the election.
