Male’ City Council to request criminal investigation against former Housing Minister

Male’ City Council has approved a motion to request authorities to conduct a criminal investigation against former Minister of Housing Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the corruption involved in awarding flats under Hiya housing project.

The motion was passed at a meeting held yesterday over the controversial awarding of flats. The motion requested relevant authorities to investigate whether the 7000 flats developed under Hiya project were awarded to rightful tenants in addition to identifying measures taken by the government to award flats to rightful tenants.

The motion to request a criminal investigation against Muizzu was approved by the councillors present at the meeting today. During the meeting, members also remarked the important role Male’ City council must play in providing housing facilities to residents of Male’ who have not been able to get a flat.

Meanwhile, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also formed a committee to investigate the controversial housing scheme. While delivering the presidential address at the Parliament of Maldives this week, President Solih reiterated his promise to award flats to its rightful tenants this year. The president noted the committee is conducting an inspection of the living conditions of flat applicants after screening over 17,189 forms submitted to the scheme. He said evaluations and inspections of applicants from five categories have been completed.

The president additionally revealed that over 20,000 families living in Male’ region are currently in need of affordable housing.
