Maldives fully prepared to act against coronavirus: Health Minister

Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen has stated the authorities are fully prepared to cater in an event of a possible reach of coronavirus to Maldives.

Speaking in a press briefing, Health Minister Ameen said although no cases have been detected in the country so far, the authorities are fully prepared, keeping in mind the coronavirus may reach Maldives. In this regard, the minister stated an isolation facility has been established in Hulhumale' and further decided to establish an isolation centre in nearby Funadhoo to contain the virus from spreading. He added the laboratories to send samples have been identified, with arrangements made to receive results shortly, following discussions with World Health Organisation (WHO).

Furthermore, Minister Ameen assured of strengthened safety and security in airports and seaports as screening of passengers will take place. He noted passengers will undergo coronavirus screening via the thermal cameras installed in Velana International Airport (VIA) and Gan International Airport.

During the press briefing, the health minister reiterated no suspected cases of coronavirus have been found in Maldives. The minister expressed Maldives is acting in accordance with the standards of World Health Organisation (WHO), adding authorities will ensure the history of the trip before permitting entrance if any related symptoms are found from a person arriving in Maldives. He added the virus may be found in people without showing symptoms.
