The sea-to-air cargo service provided from Velana International Airport (VIA) has expanded its service to include transshipment cargo from Cambodia.
Cambodia is now the fourth country using the service. As of now, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh also use the service.
Goods are transported from Cambodia to the Maldives by sea, then flown from the Maldives to destinations in Europe.
According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the first cargo shipment from Cambodia that arrived via sea has been successfully shipped by air to its destination. The shipment was handled by CEF Logistics and flown by Qatar Airways. MACL highlighted the Maldives’ growing role as a logistics hub linking Asia and Europe.
The service is operated jointly by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL). The sea-to-air cargo service handled 335 tonnes of cargo last month.
Sea-to-air cargo services generate significant economic benefits and are provided in many countries around the world. The Maldives’ strong international airline connectivity provides opportunities to further expand the service.
