Addu City Council finalises reclamation areas

Addu City Council has finalised the reclamation areas for further development of the city.

The project involves reclamation of 228 hectares of land in Addu, distributed among the wards of the city. The largest ward of the city, Hithadhoo, has been given two reclamation areas amounting to a total of 90 hectares. The areas are located near the RAF station and Gaukendi region.

A reclamation area of 75 hectares have been set across Maradhoo and Maradhoofeydhoo, with the area located near the southern shores of the two wards. Meanwhile a plot of 38 hectares located east of the central harbour in Hulhumeedhoo has also been set for reclamation.

Furthermore, Addu City Council has decided to reclaim 25 hectares of land from the lagoon of Ismehela Hera, located north of Hulhumeedhoo. The area is intended to be used for resort development. The council has also decided to develop the island Hikahera as a resort.

The design and supervision component of the reclamation project has been contracted to the Indian joint venture of L&T Infrastructure Engineering Limited and LEA Associates Limited. The project was contracted under the USD 800 million line of credit facility provided by the Government of India.

The most recent reclamation project in Addu was conducted in 2016, when 64 hectares of land were reclaimed from Feydhoo.
