Criminal Court has ordered to detain alleged IS recruiter and terrorist Mohamed Ameen until the end of the trial over recruiting Maldivian fighters to fight in wars abroad.
The police arrested the 35-year-old on October 24 in M. Walnut house, following a special operation carried out in the capital city. While the police have sought his remand repeatedly, Judge of the Criminal Court Mohamed Shakeel decided to detain him until end of the trial after listening to the state and the defendant lawyer.
The court ordered to detain Ameen considering the gravity of the case although the case was sent to Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) for prosecution. The police have alleged Ameen is known to have materially assisted, sponsored and supported foreign fighter groups in recruiting Maldivian fighters. PG office has charged Ameen with participating in and planning terror activities.
The preliminary hearing of the case is scheduled on January 13, 2020. Ameen becomes the first Maldivian to be charged with terrorism following the amendments to the Anti-terrorism Act.
