Human rights institutions require better budgets: HRCM President

President of the Human Rights Commission Aminath Eenas has said institutions working to ensure the protection of human rights must be allocated a budget appropriate with their scope of work. Eenas made the statement while speaking at the function held to mark the International Human Rights Day.

Speaking at the function, Eenas said there is much still to be done in order to ensure the protection of human rights in Maldives, although human rights institutions currently do not receive a sufficient budget for their work. She said a better budget for human rights institutions would facilitate most of the work required to tackle the challenges faced in the protection of human rights in Maldives.

Eenas said several human rights violations still occur in the Maldivian society, adding cooperation is required from all sectors in order to bring an end to these violations. She said human rights laws and regulations are still not being fully implemented and there are several delays in providing justice to victims of human rights violations.

During the function, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih launched the Maldives Human Rights Portal, which will enable easier public access to information on human rights. A study report on the level of services provided to senior citizens and disabled persons in Addu City was also publicised during the function.

HRCM says 467 cases have been filed at the commission this year, most of which are related to the conditions of inmates in prison. HRCM says the investigation of 349 of these cases have been completed.
