Judiciary Committee approves Shameem for PG

Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary has approved the nomination submitted by the president to be appointed as the Prosecutor General (PG). President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih nominated Hussain Shameem to be appointed as the PG.

Three candidates submitted applications for the position, following the resignation of former PG Aishath Bisham. Former Deputy Prosecutor General Mariyam Nihayath and Ahmed Zaneen, a lawyer, were the other applicants.

Bisham resigned as PG at a time Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary was seeking to dismiss her on allegations of negligence in taking responsibility and providing false information. She has denied all accusations and claimed the acts of her dismissal motion was being pursued against the objectives of the constitution.

Bisham was appointed as PG during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on November 24, 2015.
