Yameen detained in Male’ Prison, completes medical check-up

Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) has revealed former President Abdulla Yameen is currently serving his prison sentence in Male’ Prison.

MCS said Yameen is set to serve his prison sentence in Male’ Prison, although he could be transferred to another prison if there is such a necessity in the future. It is not yet clear if Yameen is being detained in a separate cell, isolated from other inmates.

Former President Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday, after Criminal Court of Maldives found him guilty of the money laundering charges pressed by the state against him. He was also given a fine of USD 5 million.

Furthermore, the former president was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for a medical check-up. MCS informed the medical check-up is part of the standard protocol followed for all new inmates.
