Department of Prisons has begun the demolition of some unused sections of Dhoonidhoo Prison.
Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla revealed some unused sections in Dhoonidhoo Prison are currently being demolished to revamp the facility. The sections being demolished have been unused for several months. Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed also participated at the commencement of the demolition.
Dhoonidhoo Prison is used as a temporary detention centre for suspects and criminals during interrogation and justice process. The government has been conducting various projects to improve the standards of Maldivian prisons.
While an audit has been conducted to evaluate the conditions, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assured to adhere to the Mandela Rules, which is the minimum requirements of a facility for inmates.
Additionally, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture Nils Melzer has also remarked the efforts of the administration to improve the conditions of the jails.
