President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Drug Court Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir to the bench of the Supreme Court.
The appointment was made by the president at a ceremony held at President’s Office under the powers vested in him under Article 148 (a) of the Constitution of Maldives, authorising him on the appointment of Justices to the Supreme Court of Maldives, following consultation from the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) and with the majority approval from the lawmakers present and voting at the parliament. In this regard, Mahaz was approved with votes from 55 parliamentarians.
The president nominated two names, including Mahaz, with one of them to be appointed to the vacant position left following the removal of Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Didi on August 28.
On September 4, the president appointed Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Aisha Shujoon Mohamed to the Supreme Court. They are first female appointments to the Supreme Court. They were appointed to the two positions added to the bench, increasing the total number of judges at Supreme Court from five to seven.
