The Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary has made another U-turn in the efforts to dismiss Prosecutor General (PG) Aishath Bisham.
On Wednesday, Parliamentarian Moosa Siraj presented a motion to the committee to remove Bisham. The motion seconded by Parliamentarian Saud Hussain was passed by the committee. The committee decided to forward the decision to dismiss Bisham to the Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
However, citing the motion was submitted against procedures, the committee made a U-turn and announced the efforts to dismiss Bisham has been abandoned.
Previously, no confidence motions against Bisham was presented twice. However, the motions were later retracted without sending them to the parliament floor for voting.
The parliamentarians who previously submitted the motion against Bisham claimed she did not ensure the validity regarding the baseless arrests of parliamentarians by the previous administration.
Recently, Bisham has faced criticism for her approach in prosecutions. Moosa Siraj said the most important step in building and ensuring integrity is the removal of the PG who has prosecuted many individuals unjustifiably and against constitutional rights.
Aishath Bisham was appointed as the PG during the administration of Yameen on November 24, 2015.
