Foreign Relations Committee to Review Key Diplomatic Nominations

Parliament has advanced President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's nominations for Maldives' non-resident ambassadors to Bhutan, Kuwait, and the Swiss Federation to a parliamentary committee for review. The nominations were submitted to the Foreign Relations Committee of parliament for examination during Wednesday’s session.

Pursuant to the Foreign Service Act, the president is mandated to obtain parliamentary approval before appointing ambassadors and high commissioners to the country’s foreign missions.

President Dr Muizzu proposed Shiuneen Rasheed as the non-resident ambassador to Bhutan. Rasheed currently serves as the High Commissioner of Maldives to Bangladesh. For the position of non-resident ambassador to Kuwait, the president has put forward Ahmed Sareer, who presently holds the position of ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

Dr Salma Rasheed is the third nominee, designated as the non-resident ambassador to the Swiss Federation. Rasheed currently serves as the Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations in Geneva. These nominations will undergo scrutiny by the Parliament Foreign Relations Committee before being presented for a vote on the parliamentary floor.
