ACC investigating compensations issued by the state

The newly appointed Anti=Corruption Commission (ACC) has stated it is investigating the compensations issued by the state regarding termination of contracts.

Recently, the Government of Maldives has issued several millions of dollars as severance to companies for terminating contracts. While, the government paid compensations to the companies whose contracts were terminated by the previous administration, designs and terms of the contracts have been renegotiated and amended.

Speaking at the first press conference held by the newly appointed members of the commission, President of ACC Mariyam Shauna said importance has been given to investigate cases of contract termination and issuance of compensation.

Noting the high amount issued as compensation in the past few months, ACC member Ibrahim Shakeel said the cases would be investigated individually.

Over the past several months, the government has issued USD 50 million as compensation to Noomadi and USD 18 million for Nexbis Sdn Bhd. Other compensation packages have been provided for resort developers and individuals who did not receive the apartments they had purchased as part of the social housing scheme, most notably the scandal by SeaLife Global.
