Speaker of Parliament President Mohamed Nasheed has tasked Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender to investigate allegations of corruptions against member of Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) Moosa Ali Kaleyfaanu. He has been accused of a USD 1.5 million corruption scandal that took place during his time at National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Members of the committee has said keeping him as a member at HRCM would unfasten the integrity and independence of the commission. Clause 210 of the Parliament Act asserts a parliamentarian can submit a motion to dismiss a member from an independent institution. The speaker is authorised to send the motion to relevant committees for investigation once the motion is submitted.
Moosa Ali Kaleyfaanu was appointed to HRMC in 2015 during the presidency of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The allegations against him is from the time he served as the Director General at then-National Disaster Management Centre from 2007-2010.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions has submitted a motion to dismiss Vice President of Civil Service Commission (CSC) Shaheed Mohamed.
