Will not be found guilty of any charges: Yameen

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated he will not be proven guilty of corruption charges against him.

Speaking at a gathering held by Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) in Huraa, Kaafu Atoll, former President Yameen described the charges against him as an attempt by the government to disrupt his efforts from visiting the people. He further said his troubles have escalated since he began visiting the islands, as part of campaigns for the coming local council elections. However, he assured to remain resolute by the interferences. He also called on the authorities to prove the money laundering charges against him in court instead of baseless accusations against him.

PPM is a strong force and remain steadfast although the government is accusing him and others at the party of illicit activities, according to Yameen. He further said the administration is also speculating stories as there is an election ahead.

The former president further said the opposition could have impeached him via courts and parliament had he abused public funds for personal gain. However, he noted no such motions were filed as he had not carried any illicit activities. He also said the charges against him are politically motivated.

Former President Yameen also explained support for Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has not spread across all islands in the country. He said he rather believed people are generally working in favour of the government, regardless of the regime.
