Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) has filed 7 charges at the Criminal Court against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb over the corruption scandal of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
PG office filed 7 charges against Adeeb over corruption, money laundering, embezzlement of state funds via MMPRC in 2014 and 2015. The cases were filed after Maldives Polices Services (MPS) submitted the cases to PG Office following a joint-investigation with Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Presidential Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery.
The former vice president was previously charged and found guilty of embezzling acquisition fee of Maabinhura in Lhaviyani Atoll, although it was later dismissed by the High Court demanding a re-investigation. PG Office has appealed the case at the Supreme Court.
Adeeb was set free once Criminal Court's decision to sentence Adeeb for 33 years in jail was annulled.
Last August, Adeeb tried to flee the country on a tug boat while under a travel ban and was placed under house arrest. Adeeb was sentence to 3 months in jail for the offence.
Adeeb has signed an agreement with MPS to fully cooperate in the investigations and reveal all accomplices involved in the MMPRC scandal.
Earlier this month, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih revealed the amount of the funds embezzled totals around 220 million US dollars from the lease of over 60 islands. The president also explained the government is working to reach new agreements with the leasers to ensure state funds are collected. He also assured the public to prosecute all parties involved in the biggest scandal in Maldives.
